Muslim Border Conflict: Rising Casualties & Escalation

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaTensions on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have risen again after a security post in Pakistan’s northwestern region was attacked by an armed group, killing six soldiers and triggering heavy gunfire throughout the night.

Security and police officials said the attack occurred in the Kurram tribal district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, on Monday (8/12/2025) night towards Tuesday (9/12/2025). Armed groups reportedly stormed the post, triggering intense gunfire in the dark.

This latest attack adds to a long series of deadly incidents along the border that in recent weeks have killed dozens of people. According to the news agency AFPTehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Six security personnel were killed and four others were injured, while two militants were also killed in the fighting,” an unnamed government official told AFP.

The TTP, which has been fighting against Islamabad for almost two decades, has increasingly launched attacks in border areas in recent years. The Pakistani government accuses the Taliban authorities who have been in power in Afghanistan since 2021 of providing protection to the group, a charge Kabul denies.

The Afghan government maintains that Pakistan’s security is the country’s “internal matter.”

Tensions escalated last October when a week of clashes and artillery fire killed around 70 people and injured hundreds more. After that, Afghan and Pakistani officials signed a ceasefire agreement mediated by Qatar, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. But conditions remain fragile, and cross-border incidents continue to occur.

Last Friday, gunfire and artillery shelling at a border gate again killed four civilians and a soldier, according to Afghan authorities.

The situation is increasingly sensitive due to other problems outside the battlefield. The Pakistani government is accelerating the process of mass expulsion of millions of Afghan refugees who have long lived in the country.

However, last week Islamabad said that it would immediately allow UN aid to pass through Pakistan again to be distributed to Afghanistan.
