During Trump’s 2016 campaign, some outlets depicted them as clashing titans, with reports indicating that Murdoch considered Trump a “phony.” Murdoch was privately skeptical of Trump’s chances and sometimes publicly critical of his policies, especially his stance on immigration. Trump even accused Murdoch of tweeting “evil” things about him. Author Michael wolff claimed that Murdoch called Trump a “fucking idiot” during the transition, a claim Murdoch denied. After the January 6th insurrection,Murdoch reportedly wanted to make Trump a “non person.” He also seemed to support Ron DeSantis as a 2024 primary challenger and lobbied Trump against picking J. D.Vance as his running mate. After Trump filed his Epstein lawsuit,he demanded that Murdoch testify promptly,citing murdoch’s age.

Periods of Warmth and Alignment

Despite the conflicts, there were also periods of warmth.In 2016, Murdoch eventually supported Trump. In 2017, it was reported that they spoke often, with Murdoch offering support to Trump.While Trump’s denial of the 2020 election results may have displeased Murdoch, he admitted to not preventing Fox stars from supporting Trump’s claims. Murdoch acknowledged this under oath during a libel suit brought by dominion, which Fox settled for $787.5 million. This year,Murdoch has been seen at the Inauguration,in the Oval Office,and in Trump’s box at a soccer game. Reports indicate they still talk.

Murdoch’s Dual Approach

Murdoch’s approach involves shaping public opinion while also anticipating and following it. He backs politicians who are kind to his interests and likely to win, including figures like Tony Blair. When Trump gained popularity, Murdoch aligned himself accordingly. Jane Mayer wrote in this magazine, in 2019 that he benefitted from favorable regulatory actions during Trump’s term.
