More and more girls are suffering from disordered eating habits 2024-04-26 17:49:29

More and more young girls are having an eating disorder. This is shown by a survey by the commercial health insurance company. What could be the cause of the increase?

Eating disorders have increased significantly, particularly among girls. As data from the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH) showed on Thursday, cases of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating among twelve to 17-year-old girls increased by around 54 percent between 2012 and 2022. While 90 cases per 10,000 insured people were registered in 2012, ten years later there were already 139 cases.

According to the KKH, it is not just the beauty trends promoted on social media that can put a lot of strain on the psyche and fuel self-doubt in young people, which can lead to mental illnesses such as eating disorders. The corona pandemic also seems to have hit teenage girls in particular. From the pre-corona year of 2019 to 2022 alone, the KKH registered a 38 percent increase in eating disorders in this age group.

At the same time, the proportion of twelve to 17-year-old girls with eating disorders is around four times as high as boys of the same age, with 38 cases per 10,000 insured people.

Preparing for the Future: A Guide to Easing the Burden of Widows Work and Solo Exercise Safety

This week’s must-reads:

  • An arthritis drug helps old dogs, but some owners worry about side effects
  • What is ‘oil pulling,’ and is it good for your teeth?
  • How cleaning product chemicals called ‘quats’ may affect the brain
  • Do women who live together get their periods together, or is it a myth?
  • Can dogs ‘catch’ yawns from humans?

The daunting task of ‘widow’s work’

This week I was moved by an essay by a 92-year-old writer, Barbara Morris, who shared the emotional and logistical challenges of widowhood. She lost her husband, Ward, after 56 years of marriage.

Both the readers and I were struck by her description of “widow’s work” — the financial, insurance, medical and legal paperwork that those left behind must sift through after someone dies.

To help people prepare for these events — and hopefully minimize the strain of widow’s work — AARP has a number of useful guides. Here are four simple steps to take now so that life will be easier for you or your loved ones should one of you die:

  1. Prepare an end-of-life notebook:This AARP worksheet will get you started on compiling all the documents — medical,

Understanding the Different Types of Headaches: What Really Hurts?

The list of headache types is long. Sometimes short bursts of pain, sometimes attacks lasting hours. Then again on one side of your head, next time around your eyes or near your temples. No matter what type of headache you have, it can get in your way. Where do these complaints come from? And what really hurts?

Less research on what is most common

The most common are ‘daily’ tension headaches. “But at the same time, we know the least about that,” says Rolf Fronczek, a neurologist at Leiden University Medical Center and specializes in headaches.

“There hasn’t been a lot of research done on common headaches. Usually people don’t go to the doctor about that.’ Often it is a feeling of pressure above your eyes. The pain is less intense. You take paracetamol or go to bed and it’s over the next day.

Tension headache

Any headache that does not meet the criteria for other headaches, such as migraines and cluster headaches, is called a tension headache. These headaches have no clear cause in your brain. With a headache, all you have is a headache, which doesn’t get worse with a little effort.

Upsurge in whooping cough in Europe, call for increased vigilance in France

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection whose transmission occurs mainly within the family or in communities through contact with a sick person with a cough. Even though the number of cases of whooping cough has decreased significantly since the introduction of the vaccine, the bacteria continues to circulate. Infants too young to be vaccinated and adolescents and adults who have lost vaccine protection are the most affected populations. Outside our borders, Europe is currently experiencing an upsurge in cases of whooping cough with significant epidemics in Croatia, Denmark and the United Kingdom and significant increases in Belgium, Spain and Germany. In France, since the start of 2024, around twenty grouped cases (or clusters) have been reported to Public Health France in 8 French regions versus 2 grouped cases in a single region (Ile-de-France) for throughout 2023. Given this clear increase in the number of cluster cases reported, Public Health France remains vigilant and recalls the importance of vaccination to protect people at risk of serious forms.

A resumption of the circulation of whooping cough begins in France

Whooping cough progresses in cycles of recrudescence every 3 to 5 years. In France, surveillance data from the RENACOQ network (the hospital pertussis surveillance network) have shown six epidemic peaks in recent years: 1997,

Vienna Medical Association on the obligation to submit fee notes: Massive uncertainty among patients and elective doctors 2024-04-26 17:44:22

Eligible doctors criticize the legal implementation and finally demand clarity

Vienna (OTS) – From July 1st, the transmission of fee notes to the health insurance providers by elective doctors will be regulated by law. The Vienna Medical Association welcomes this step in principle, but sharply criticizes the lack of clarity that still exists less than three months before the new regulation comes into effect. Patients are increasingly turning to their medical advisor because they are unsure. Many people don’t want their data to be shared. The Vienna Medical Association makes it clear that the electronic transmission of fee notes may only take place with the consent of the patient. Patients who do not want this can submit fee notes to the health insurance provider themselves as usual after July 1st, or not at all.

The new regulations are also causing dissatisfaction among the medical profession. The reason for this is that the legislature provides for exceptions and transitional regulations for elective doctors in the sense of “proportionality”, but has not formulated these. As a result, it is still completely unclear which doctor will actually be exempt from the obligation to submit data from July 1st and who will have to implement this.
