The male pig-tailed macaque bit chunks out of the 63-year-old man, who attempted to fight off the animal that had been terrorising residents before entering his home

A pensioner has been killed by a wild monkey that bit him to death as he struggled to fight off the animal in his own home.

Chaiphum Sae-eung, 63, is believed to have attempted to fight off the money that entered his home in Yala, in southern Thailand. The monkey had been terrorising residents and reportedly scratched Chaiphum before biting him in the leg.

His body was later found slumped against the wall with dozens of bite marks found all over him. His horrified nephew Pipat Sae-eung said he found his uncle lying in a pool of his own blood on December 6.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Chaiphum’s body clutching a metal rod that he used to defend himself. The monkey’s footprints were visible in the dried blood on the floor.

Officers later found the male pig-tailed macaque perched on the rafters of the home. Daily Mail reported police major Jakkarin Laksana of the Betong Police station said: “We speculate that he had been dead for around two to three days because his body was bloated and emitting a foul stench.

“We sent his body to Betong Hospital for a post-mortem examination. We do not believe any people were involved in the death.”

Villagers claimed the monkey acted aggressively and had been roaming the area, following a female. It is also blamed for biting Chaiphum on the shoulder about 10 days earlier.

Before the deadly attack, the monkey chased a family – forcing them to leave their home. Police are now tracking the monkey in a bid to keep people in the area safe. A shoot-to-kill notice has been issued for the animal.

Police Major Jakkarin said: “The monkey will be killed if it is seen. The danger that it could attack more people is too high.”

Monkeys have become a menace across many regions in Thailand where macaques have become unruly and had taken over buildings as well as stealing items.
