A tabulation system is used to determine the Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year awards, awarding five points for a first-place vote, three points for second and one point for third.
To choose the Cy Young for the best pitcher in each circuit, a system is used that awards seven points for first place vote, four points for second, three points for third, two points for fourth and one point for fifth.
In the Most Valuable Player vote, a first-place vote is awarded 14 points, nine for second, eight for third, and so on in descending order to one point for tenth place on the voter’s ballot.
The Most Valuable Player award has been given since 1931, but it was in 1944 when the trophy began to be awarded under the name Kenesaw Mountain Landis, in honor of the first commissioner of Major League Baseball.
The Cy Young, named in honor of the pitcher with the record for wins (511) in the Big League, was awarded in 1956 to the most outstanding pitcher in baseball and since 1967 it has been awarded to a pitcher in each league.
Journalists began choosing the most outstanding rookie from both leagues in 1947 and two years later, they decided to award one per league. In 1987 it was named after Jackie Robinson, who was the first winner, in 1947, when he broke the racial barrier.
The prize for leaders is the youngest of all. It began to be delivered in 1983 to the most outstanding drivers in their respective leagues.
