Minichmayr & Lazar: Event Details & Highlights | 2025

by Archynetys Entertainment Desk

The Viennese writer Maria Lazar was born into an upper-middle-class Jewish family in 1895 and is one of the most productive literary voices of her time. But unlike her male colleagues Elias Canetti or Hermann Broch, Lazar’s work was hardly published during his lifetime. At the beginning of the 1930s she fled with her little daughter Judith to her closest friend Helene Weigel in Berlin. She later went into exile with the Brecht family in Denmark and Sweden. Here she found a living as a translator of works from the Scandinavian region, but wrote primarily under the pseudonym Esther Grenen.

Maria Lazar’s literary oeuvre was considered lost for over 70 years and was only rediscovered in 2014 by the Viennese Germanist Johann Sonnleitner. A look into the author’s estate, which was in boxes and boxes under her granddaughter’s bed in a district of Nottingham, finally revealed a small sensation. In addition to unpublished novels, brilliant short stories and clever plays, Maria Lazar also wrote poems. They provide an insight into the final months of a great and unjustly forgotten author who ended her own life in 1948.
