In the election yesterday, half of the Chamber of Deputies and a third of the Senate were replaced. Milei’s party “La Libertad Avanza” got more than 40 percent after almost all votes were counted. The left-wing opposition received almost 32 percent.
With the result, the right-wing populist president, together with his allies in Congress, could get at least a third of the mandates and thus the necessary quorum to defend a presidential veto against parliamentary resolutions. With his extreme austerity policies, the president has managed to balance the budget and reduce inflation. But the hoped-for economic upswing has so far failed to materialize.
Trump: “Overwhelming victory”
Milei’s ally, US President Trump, congratulated him on the – quote – “overwhelming victory.” Trump had threatened to scrap a $20 billion aid package for Argentina’s struggling economy if Milei suffered defeat.
In September, Milei’s camp suffered a clear electoral defeat: in the regional elections in the province of Buenos Aires, where around 40 percent of Argentines live, the libertarian alliance was clearly behind the Peronist Party.
