John Giannandrea, Apple’s senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, is stepping down from his role. The company announced this on Monday.
Giannandrea will continue to work as a consultant at Apple until the spring before retiring.
Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed gratitude for Giannandrea’s contribution to the development of the company’s AI work. He helped Apple continue to innovate and enrich users’ lives.
Giannandrea worked at Apple for almost eight years and previously worked at Google.
Amar Subramanya, most recently Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft, will now succeed Giannandrea as Vice President of AI at Apple. He previously worked at Google for several years.
Subramanya spent 16 years at Google, leading engineering for Gemini, the company’s AI assistant, before moving to Microsoft in July.
The changes come at a time when the battle for AI talent has become more intense. Big tech companies are trying to recruit and retain top engineers and researchers with offers worth millions.
Earlier this year, Meta poached several top AI researchers from Apple, Bloomberg reported. At the same time, Microsoft tried to poach top engineers from Meta, as we reported.
These developments underscore the importance of AI talent in the tech industry. Companies invest heavily in recruiting and retaining experts in order to remain competitive.
As AI technology continues to advance, competition for skilled workers is expected to become even more intense. Companies must develop innovative strategies to attract the best talent.
