Discover The Barn: Metro Vancouver’s New Country Bar Experience
Step into a new era of country bar tradition in Metro Vancouver. Nestled in Surrey at 15330 102a Avenue, The Barn Country Bar is a refreshing destination for music, dance, and delicious, affordable eats. With a spacious footprint of nearly 10,000 square feet, this two-story establishment aims to bring country fans together like never before.
The Evolution from The Taphouse to The Barn
Before it became The Barn, this space was home to The Taphouse, which closed its Surrey doors in 2023. The opportunity to transform The Taphouse into something new was presented to Owen Coomer, one of the current owners. Coomer, with his long-standing passion for owning his own business, seized the chance to breathe new life into the venue.
Initially, he and his partner considered continuing as The Taphouse to manage costs, but they realized the potential to rebrand and create a truly unique country bar. This decision marked a new era inCooper’s career, aligning with his vision of providing a vibrant space for country enthusiasts.

During its rebranding journey, The Barn faced initial skepticism. Some patrons were confused by the quick reopening, while others questioned the owners’ motives. However, Coomer persevered, driven by his belief in a thriving country bar scene in Surrey.
Why The Barn in Metro Vancouver?
Coomer’s vision for The Barn was born from the understanding that Metro Vancouver lacked a dedicated country bar. After Roosters Country Cabaret in Pitt Meadows closed its doors in 2019, he saw an opportunity to fill that void. The Barn aims to cater to the diverse tastes of country music enthusiasts within the region.
“There isn’t really a country bar out here anymore that’s doing full-on country,” Coomer commented. “I wanted to create a destination where people from other cities could join in the fun, experience live music, and indulge in the vibrant country culture.”

The Country Experience at The Barn
Transforming The Taphouse into The Barn was not merely about changing the name but about fully embracing the country theme. Coomer retained several pre-existing features that naturally lent themselves to a country bar aesthetic, such as the vinyl-wood dance floor.
He also made significant upgrades, including fresh paint, wooden fixtures, and a vibrant stage setup, adorned with neon and metal signs. A vintage 1985 Cloverdale rodeo poster, donated by the Cloverdale Rodeo, adds to the authentic country vibe.
The Barn
For Coomer, the bar’s menu was designed to capture the essence of country bars across the United States, particularly in Nashville, Memphis, and Texas. His research revealed that most country bars feature a small but varied menu of handhelds and appetizers. Inspired by this, The Barn offers a delightful array of dishes, each with a fun and fitting country theme.
Popular menu items include the ham and cheese sandwich known as the “Hoedown” and a mischievous dessert called “Whose Bed Has Your Churros Been Under?” – a playful nod to Shania Twain’s hit song. Other rodeo staples like deep-fried Oreos and baked potatoes round out the menu, providing a taste of farm country in a twist.

Highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to affordability and quality, Coomer explains, “We’ve done everything we can to keep the prices of food and alcohol low without compromising on quality.” For instance, their triple-patty sandwich, “The Showpiece,” is accompanied by a cowbell, serving as a visual spectacle as much as a culinary treat.
Future Plans for The Barn
While The Barn has already made a significant impact since its February 2025 opening, Coomer has ambitious plans for future enhancements. One of the questions he frequently gets is whether a mechanical bull will be part of the experience.
“I’m exploring the possibility of bringing a mechanical bull here for special events,” Coomer revealed. “Perhaps we’ll have a one-off night or two in spring or summer.” Until then, visitors can enjoy the existing offerings of live music, line dancing, and a menu filled with country goodness.
