“Man on Fire” is probably one of Denzel Washington’s best films, and not just for FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian. Can the Netflix remake of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II keep up? The teaser now provides a first insight:
Published in this country under the title “The Mercenary”, AJ Quinnell’s novel is probably more likely to be known under the original title „Man On Fire“* be common. After all, this has always been the inspiration when it comes to naming film adaptations of the material. While “Man On Fire” was made into a film with Scott Glenn in 1987, Tony Scott also dared to use the original in the 2000s – and with “Man under Fire” he staged a revenge thriller that was as stylish as it was uncompromising with Denzel Washington looming over everything. The remake that is coming soon is breaking new ground in at least one respect.
Because For the first time, it’s not a film that awaits us, but one „Man On Fire“-Serie – which of course also revolves around the former mercenary John Creasy. What will the whole thing look like and when will we see the latest adaptation of the thriller? We finally know that.
“Man On Fire” exclusively on Netflix from April 30th
Netflix has now released a first teaser trailer for the series and in the same breath also revealed the release date: April 30, 2026! So it won’t be more than two months before fans of tough revenge and vigilante action will be provided with fresh supplies – and then they’ll see the third well-known actor in the role of John Creasy.
If “Equalizer” mime Denzel Washington burned himself into the collective memory in an impressive way with his performance, it remains to be seen whether his successor will also succeed. In his place we’ll see this time John Abdul-Matthew II in the title role – who is not trying for the first time to fill the shoes of a well-known and revered predecessor. In “Matrix Resurrections,” the “Aquaman” and “Wonder Man” star finally (more or less) took on the role of Laurence Fishburne as the new version of Morpheus.
