Diseases of the circulatory system and cancer were the main causes of death among residents of Maringá in 2025, according to preliminary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM), of the Ministry of Health. In the first half of the year alone, the municipality recorded 1,465 deaths per household, a number that considers residents of the city regardless of the place where the death occurred.
The survey shows that cardiovascular problems, such as heart attack and stroke, lead the ranking, with 337 deaths between January and June. Close behind are neoplasms (cancer), responsible for 323 deaths in the same period.
In third place are diseases of the respiratory system, with 168 deaths, followed by external causes, such as accidents and violence, which totaled 135 deaths. Nervous system diseases, including Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions, caused 134 deaths in the first half of the year.
Other causes that also draw attention to the data are diseases of the digestive system (104 deaths), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes (71), and diseases of the genitourinary system (66).
Also considering records from the months of July and August, there are 1,822 deaths in 2025.
Aging, chronic diseases and lifestyle explain the numbers

For doctor Thiago Persona, general and emergency surgeon at Santa Casa de Maringá and Samu, the data follows a trend observed throughout Brazil. According to him, the aging of the population, combined with the high prevalence of chronic diseases and unhealthy habits, helps to explain the numbers.
“Of course, it is not possible to avoid all deaths, but it is possible to postpone more critical situations and improve the quality and length of life. To achieve this, it is essential to control chronic diseases and reduce risk factors”, he states.
How to prevent heart attack and stroke, the main causes of death
Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of deaths in Maringá, are directly associated with high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. The doctor highlights that prevention involves simple but continuous care, such as measuring blood pressure regularly, reducing salt consumption, avoiding alcoholic beverages, practicing physical activity for at least 30 minutes, five times a week, and correctly following medication treatment, when indicated.
“Heart attack and stroke can lead to permanent disability, such as loss of movement, speech or leaving the person bedridden. This directly impacts families and overloads the healthcare system”, highlights Persona.
Cancer: early diagnosis saves lives
Cancer, the second leading cause of death in the city, is also linked to aging, in addition to genetic, environmental and behavioral factors. The expert warns of the risks of smoking, including electronic cigarettes and hookah, and the frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods, which weaken the body’s defenses.
Among the types that lead to most deaths are prostate, breast and cervical cancer. According to the doctor, the SUS offers screening tests for these diseases and also for other types of cancer, but there is still a lack of public awareness. “In addition to imaging exams, preventive cervical exams, PSA and self-examination help to identify the disease earlier. The earlier the diagnosis, the greater the chances of effective treatment”, he concludes.
