In Sunday’s meeting of the Social Democrats, Sorin Grindeanu accused the USR and Ilie Bolojan of “thirst for blood” when it comes to reducing state spending, according to Digi24. Furthermore, the head of the PSD said that the party will not accept further cuts and again threatened to leave the government. Instead, the social democrats come up with a series of social aid proposals that basically reverse several decisions made by the Coalition last year.

Grindeanu said in yesterday’s meeting that the PSD will no longer accept cuts, warning that the party will not remain in government “just for the sake of apparent stability”.
“It seems that this parliamentary session is a special period and it is good to prepare. (…) We did not come to this Coalition to hold on to our seats, as some try to portray us. It is better to leave if you cannot deliver for the people, or it is better for those who are fed up not to do anything for the people to leave! And they are not us”, declared the head of the PSD.
“The sick thirst for blood of some Coalition partners is likely to lead us to other proposals this year. We will no longer accept cuts, such as no leu from education. We are not in a toxic political relationship just for the sake of apparent stability. Political stability must not mean the impoverishment of Romanians. There are no red lines, they are mandatory things. We cannot make money from everything,” he added, according to information obtained by Digi24.
The social democrats decided to support the emergency adoption of the economic recovery package and the solidarity package. The latter aims at measures to protect pensioners and other vulnerable categories in the face of the increase in the cost of living, according to a press release sent by the party.
“The absolute priority of this moment is the cost of living and the standard of living of the Romanians. The adoption of the economic recovery package and the solidarity package, with measures for pensioners, low-income families and other vulnerable categories, cannot be blocked by sterile discussions about functions or political scenarios that generate instability. I warn all those responsible that the limit of bearability has already been exceeded, and Romania can no longer afford all kinds of financial experiments that directly hit the population and companies”, he transmitted by Sorin Grindeanu.
Measures proposed by PSD
- elimination of CASS for mothers
- elimination of CASS for the minimum income of inclusion
- Budgetary impact – 670,473,750 lei
Aid for pensioners
- 1,000 lei (2 installments: April / December) – pension under 1,500 lei
- 800 lei (2 installments: April / December) – pension between 1,501 – 2,000 lei.
- 600 lei (2 installments: April / December) – pension between 2,001 – 3,000 lei.
- Total impact: 2.3 billion lei
PSD also says that there is a need for an aid scheme for vulnerable people after the liberalization of gas prices, on the model of the energy one.
“Also, the PSD firmly claims that it will not accept any cut from the Education budget, because the cost reductions carried out in 2025 have already caused major problems for the education system. The Social Democratic Party will only support solutions that reduce the pressure on people and the economy and will politically sanction any attempt to prolong austerity at the expense of the vulnerable”, the statement added.
The social democrats also say that “the approval of these packages is necessary and must be carried out quickly before the adoption of the consolidated budget for 2026.”
