Mariah Carey, known for hits like Always Be My Baby, recently sparked discussion by expressing her reservations about the Grammy Awards during an “Over/Under” segment with Pitchfork. She shared her candid thoughts on the prestigious music event.

Grammys Didn’t Escape Her Criticism

Despite receiving 34 nominations and several wins throughout her career, Carey stated, “I think the Grammys are overrated.” She added,”But we love everybody,” delivering the comment with both honesty and humor.

Reports indicate that Carey has previously described both the show and the award as “overrated,” suggesting dissatisfaction with how the Recording Academy has treated her over time. On the “Las Culturistas” podcast last year, she claimed the Academy “scammed” her, stating, “They toy with me.”

“I think the Grammys are overrated. But we love everybody.”

Her skepticism is further highlighted by her history with the Grammys. In 1996, Carey experienced a significant snub when Daydream lost in all six nominated categories, despite widespread critical acclaim.

In 2024,the Recording Academy presented her with a Global Impact Award, acknowledging her enduring influence, even though competitive victories have been infrequent.

New Music Ahead

While discussing the Grammys,Carey also offered a glimpse into her future musical endeavors. In an interview with Apple Music, she described her forthcoming album as “a special occasion/Mimi’s emancipation,” suggesting it is nearing completion. “It’s finished,” she revealed, while adding, “I don’t wanna tell too much about it because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing.” A second single is reportedly in development.

Carey characterized her new single,Type Risky,as a “heavy record” with “real weight,” assuring fans that the album will include the ballads they anticipate. The track includes a sample from Eric B. & Rakim’s Eric B.Is President, a project that Carey said originated unexpectedly during a moment in Aspen, inspired by the music playing.
