Universal Pictures boss swears she will “find a way” to bring Meryl Streep back to Mamma Mia 3. Donna Langley, president of NBC Universal Entertainment, confirmed the start of work on a third opus during the latest BAFTAs.
“Yes, I’m going to say it now: there will be a Mamma Mia 3,” she assured Deadline on the red carpet of the event, specifying that she was in active discussions with Judy Craymer, the producer of the first two films.
It was on this occasion that she was asked about a possible return of Meryl Streep. A prospect that seemed to enchant him, even though Donna Sheridan’s character died before the events of Mamma Mia ! Here We Go Again ! “If Meryl Streep wants to come back, we will find a way to bring her back,” she assured.
Eight years of waiting for fans
This announcement puts an end to years of speculation, while rumors of a return of the franchise had swelled in recent months. Indeed, Amanda Seyfried, who plays the character of Sophie, declared last year that she was ready to “do Mamma Mia 3 without hesitation.”
So if no release date has been brought forward, this announcement suggests that things are well underway for the return of the successful musical franchise inspired by ABBA’s hits. Universal would be wrong to deprive themselves when we know that the first two films grossed more than 900 million dollars at the worldwide box office!
