The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sent a letter to 40 states, including Maine, demanding that the states remove all references to “gender ideology” sexual education in schools that receive funding from the federal government. “This action reflects the Trump Administration’s ongoing commitment to protecting children from attempts to indoctrinate them with delusional ideology,” HHS wrote in a press release.According to GLAAD, “gender ideology” refers to someone who a transgender person and insinuates that it is, “an ideological movement rather than an intrinsic identity.”The Trump administration is giving states 60 days to remove these references. Maine has until late October to comply.Last week, the administration terminated a grant to the state of California after it did not remove “gender ideology” from school materials. The administration says failure to comply could result in the withholding of federal funding.
