The place given to the visit to France of the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, received this November 11 at the Élysée by Emmanuel Macron, fluctuates according to the headlines in the Palestinian press.
Daily life Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, considered the mouthpiece of the Palestinian Authority, in fact the main title of its today’s edition, ahead of the coverage of the commemorations of the death, twenty-one years ago, of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The newspaper Al-Ayyam gives it a place on the front page, but below the attack on the village of Beit Lid by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, while the daily Al-Quds devotes only a box on the first page to this visit.
“President of the State of Palestine”
It has, however, a certain symbolic charge, because it was Mahmoud Abbas’s first visit to France since the French president officially recognized the State of Palestine at the United Nations in September. And, as such, Paris now officially designates it as the “president of the State of Palestine”.
Between the two men, who spoke at a joint press conference following their interview, there was talk of “the future of Gaza and the West Bank”, as written Al-Quds.
