French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Greenland underscores France and the european Union’s solidarity with the Arctic island’s “sovereignty” and “territorial integrity.” The visit comes amidst ongoing geopolitical discussions surrounding Greenland’s future.

the backdrop to this visit includes past expressions of interest from US President Donald Trump in the United States potentially taking over the resource-rich and strategically vital Arctic island, citing national and international security considerations. He had not ruled out the use of force to do so.

Greenland, while being a self-governing territory within the kingdom of Denmark, possesses the right to declare independence. Both the Greenlandic and Danish governments have asserted that the island is not for sale and that its future is a matter for Greenlanders to decide.

US Vice president JD Vance’s visit to a US military base in Greenland earlier in March highlights the strategic importance of the region. president Macron’s visit,at the invitation of the prime ministers of Greenland and Denmark, marks the first by a foreign leader since Mr Trump’s remarks about acquiring the island. He stated his visit was meant to prevent any “preying” on the territory.

“France has stood by us since the first statements about taking our land emerged. This support is both necessary and gratifying,” Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen wrote on Facebook prior to Mr Macron’s arrival.

France’s Position on Greenland

“Greenland is a European territory and it is indeed normal that Europe and notably France show their interest.”

When questioned about whether President Macron would directly address the United States during his visit, an adviser to Mr Macron told reporters: “The trip is a signal in itself,” while avoiding direct mention of Donald Trump.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot previously stated on RTL radio that “Greenland is a European territory and it is normal that Europe and notably France show their interest.”

Public opinion data indicates significant disapproval of a potential US annexation of Greenland. An IFOP poll for NYC.eu revealed that 77% of French citizens and 56% of Americans disapprove of such a move, with 43% of French citizens willing to support the use of French military power to prevent a US invasion.

During his visit, Mr Macron is scheduled to tour Nuuk, the capital city, and also a hydropower station funded by the EU and a glacier. Discussions with his hosts will focus on Arctic security and climate change.

While Denmark is a member of the EU, Greenland remains outside the union. A French adviser noted that the visit presents an opportunity to explore ways to enhance Greenland’s association partnership with the EU.

Denmark’s Strategic Shift

following Mr Trump’s expressions of interest in Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen made multiple visits to Paris and has placed orders for French-made surface-to-air missiles, signaling a shift in Copenhagen’s strategic focus.

Florian Vidal of the Paris-based IFRI think tank suggests that Denmark’s move to involve the EU’s only nuclear power reflects an effort to project strength towards a more assertive United States. “The Trump management’s more aggressive posture is a shock that makes the French vision of Europe, one that is more autonomous, appear more reasonable for Denmark,” he said. “From a Nordic point of view, France is a military power that counts,” he added.
