Reimagining Classics: Ami Je Tomar
When asked about his thought process when reimagining a classic like Ami Je Tomar for a modern audience,Malik emphasized the importance of aligning with the film’s narrative while creating an emotional connection with listeners beyond the film. He acknowledged the challenge of recreating an iconic song, balancing the need to honor the original with the desire to bring somthing new.
“Whenever I create a song, my first priority is ensuring that it aligns with the film’s narrative and makes sense within that context. But beyond its cinematic purpose, I believe a song should emotionally connect with listeners even outside the film,” Malik explained. He highlighted the use of prominent rhythm and basslines in his versions of Ami Je Tomar 3.0 and Mere Dholna 3.0 to resonate with today’s youth while retaining the soul of the original.
Malik expressed his satisfaction with the acceptance of the song across age groups, noting that even young children were singing the track with ease. He believes a song should outlive the film and find its own path and audience.

“Working with Sameer sahab was an absolute honor. I’ve grown up listening to his work-his songs have defined multiple eras of Bollywood music,” Malik said. He was initially hesitant due to the senior-junior dynamic but found Anjaan incredibly open and welcoming. “He listened to every suggestion, and honestly, I’m in awe of his humility and brilliance.”
Global Influences: U2 and Dua Lipa
Malik discussed how his experiences working with global icons like U2 and Dua Lipa influence his approach to Indian film music. He noted that their influence is more prominent in his independent music but acknowledged that global hits shape listener preferences in India.
“Both U2 and Dua Lipa are independent artists, so their influence has been more prominent on my independent music rather then directly on my film work,” Malik explained. He mentioned creating an Indian remix of Dua lipa’s “Levitating,” embedding elements of Indian culture into the mix, which was well-received by both Dua Lipa and the global audience with Indian roots.
