TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – In a recent speech at The Economic Insights 2025 event in Jakarta, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the chairperson of the National Economic Council (DEN) and a former Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, addressed the ‘Indonesia Gelap’ or ‘Dark Indonesia’ protests challenging President Prabowo Subianto’s policies.
Luhut’s Message of Hope and Pride
Luhut emphasized that the belief in a dark Indonesia reflects internal issues rather than external realities. “The darkness you speak of is within you, not within Indonesia,” he stated, according to Antara.
He encouraged the public to take pride in their nation, highlighting Indonesia’s progress and development. “Every country has its challenges, including America, which faces a similar job shortage issue,” he said, urging citizens to focus on the nation’s strengths rather than its perceived shortcomings.
Highlighting Indonesia’s Potential
Luhut cited the efforts of young Indonesian talents at the state-owned money printing house, Peruri, as an example of Indonesia’s burgeoning digital prowess. This entity is tasked with facilitating government digital services or govtech.
“These young professionals are developing digital systems that are crucial for our nation’s technological advancement. This potential needs to be recognized and celebrated,” said Luhut.
Addressing Concerns About Homelessness
The minister also drew attention to a significant contrast between Indonesia and the United States. Indonesia, he noted, is free of the homelessness crisis plaguing many American cities.
“This fact alone demonstrates that our conditions are much better in many respects. Let’s focus on the positive strides we have made,’ Luhut continued.
He acknowledged that challenges do exist and it is the responsibility of the government to address them. “We are on the right path to solving these issues, and it’s essential that we keep moving forward,” he added.
