Communal Grief: Cork Honors Late Lord Mayor Dan Wallace
The Lord Mayor of Cork, Green Party Councillor Dan Boyle, has inaugurated a book of condolences for Dan Wallace, a former Lord Mayor of Cork, a Minister of State, and a long-serving TD for Cork North Central. The public is invited to pay their respects by signing the book, located in Cork City Hall, from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, until Tuesday, March 4.
Dan Wallace’s Political Journey
Wallace’s political career spanned decades, rooted deeply in Cork. Elected to Cork Corporation in 1979 as a Fianna Fáil member, he served the community there until 1992. He was elected Lord Mayor of Cork in 1985, a role he held for a year.
Entering the national stage in 1982, Wallace secured first place in the Cork North Central constituency, a position he retained through seven general elections until his retirement in 2007. His tenure in the Dáil Éireann lasted almost a quarter-century.
During his parliamentary career, Wallace took on additional responsibilities as Minister of State, handling the Department of the Environment from 1992 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2002. His dedication and reliability were widely acknowledged.
His Character and Legacy
Taoiseach Micheál Martin praised Wallace, describing him as a symbol of “the decency, good nature, and fighting spirit of the northside of Cork”. This was a testament to the respect Wallace commanded both in and outside of politics.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Boyle, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Wallace’s unwavering commitment to his community, especially the northside of Cork.
Services to Honor Dan Wallace
Funeral arrangements have been announced to honor Dan Wallace’s life and legacy.
Viewing will take place at Coughlan’s Funeral Home, Shandon Street, from 11 am on Wednesday, February 19, with family attendance from 4 pm, followed by Rosary prayers at 7 pm.
His Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, February 20, at 11 am in the Church of the Resurrection, Farranree, a place he once served as a sacristan. The funeral procession will then move to St Mary’s New Cemetery, Curraghkippane.
A Tribute to Family
Dan Wallace leaves behind a significant family legacy, including his wife Ethel, his five children, numerous grandchildren, and several siblings. He is also survived by his siblings’ spouses and a vast network of friends.
Tragically, he was preceded in death by several of his siblings. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, who cherish the memories of his kind heart and unyielding advocacy for his community.
