Line 7 Train: Metro’s ‘Future’ Arrives Amid Delays

by Archynetys Economy Desk

Although the works on Line 7 of the Santiago Metro have faced delays in their progress, the project added a new milestone with the presentation of the first train that will operate on this route. Santiago Metro, together with the company Alstom, unveiled the AS-22 model, a state-of-the-art convoy designed to link Renca and Vitacura in an estimated time of 37 minutes.

The train exhibition marks a relevant step in the development of this new line, whose launch is projected for the end of the decade.

What are the new trains that will circulate on Line 7 like?

The AS-22 model is made of stainless steel and has a total extension of 102 meters. Its maximum capacity reaches 1,247 people, incorporating spaces specially enabled for people with reduced mobility in each car.

One of its main features is its completely automated operating system, since it will work without a driver, under a 100% automatic control model.

What technology do the new Metro cars incorporate?

The trains have four doors per car and wide corridors, designed to facilitate movement and improve passenger flow during times of high demand. In addition, they are equipped with air conditioning and USB-C ports for charging mobile devices.

In terms of security, the system includes high-resolution cameras and direct intercommunication devices with the Metro control center, strengthening surveillance and emergency response.

When will these trains start operating?

The start of operations of the AS-22 model is scheduled for 2028, coinciding with the inauguration of Line 7. However, this schedule could be modified due to technical problems recorded during the works, including the failure of the tunnel boring machine that participated in the excavation of the route.

Despite these setbacks, The presentation of the first completed train reinforces the progress of the project and the commitment to the modernization of public transportation in the capital.
