Leverkusen Commemorates the End of WWII with “Future Needs Memory” Exhibition
Table of Contents
On this 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day), Leverkusen is hosting a series of commemorative events under the banner “Future Needs Memory – Together for Leverkusen.” This initiative seeks to not only remember the millions who perished during World War II, but also to actively promote democracy, diversity, and social responsibility within the community.
World War II, a conflict that claimed over 60 million lives, officially ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany and its ideology of National Socialism. The Holocaust, a systematic genocide perpetrated by the Nazi regime, resulted in the murder of approximately six million Jewish people, along with countless Sinti and Roma, and other minority groups. This horrific chapter in history remains inextricably linked to Germany’s past, serving as a constant reminder of the dangers of intolerance and hatred. Today, Germany bears the responsibility to ensure that such atrocities never happen again.
Powerful Exhibitions: “Your anne” and “Against Forgetting”
Central to the commemoration are two major exhibitions:
- “Your Anne. A Girl Writes History.”: This exhibition delves into the life and legacy of Anne Frank, offering a poignant reminder of the individual stories lost during the Holocaust.
- “Against Forgetting” by luigi Toscano: Displayed on the forum and in front of the Bayer AG casino, this powerful photo exhibition features 200 large-scale portraits of Holocaust survivors, each accompanied by a brief biography. Toscano’s work serves as a stark visual reminder of the human cost of the Holocaust and the importance of bearing witness.
These exhibitions aim to connect visitors with the past in a tangible and emotional way, fostering a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact.
A Month-Long Program of remembrance and Engagement
The exhibitions are complemented by a diverse supporting program running throughout May, offering various opportunities for reflection and engagement. Events include:
- Poetry slams
- Bike tours
- Blacksmith demonstrations
- Discussions with contemporary witnesses
- Theater performances
- Guided tours
- Film screenings
- Readings
This multifaceted program aims to engage a wide audience, encouraging dialog and promoting a deeper understanding of the importance of remembrance.
Organizers and Their Mission
The “Future Needs Memory” initiative is a collaborative effort led by the Hans and Berthold Finkelstein Stiftung gGmbH (Bayer AG), the Volkshochschule Leverkusen, and the Caritas Association Leverkusen. These organizations are joined by numerous other contributors, all united by a common goal:
To promote democracy, diversity, and social responsibility in Leverkusen, while ensuring that the memory of the victims of National Socialism is never forgotten.
This initiative underscores the importance of past awareness in shaping a more just and equitable future. By confronting the past, Leverkusen aims to build a stronger, more inclusive community for all.
