Cardinal José tolentino de Mendonça, the Mayor of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, addressed attendees at the second international meeting on meaning, an event supported by Scholas Occurrent and CAF-Latin America and Caribbean Growth Bank. The cardinal highlighted how Pope Francis‘ focus on the “technological revolution,” exemplified by his choice of name, should inspire educators to integrate technology thoughtfully, fostering growth, not fear.
According to Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, navigating the rapid “news” and “revolutions” of our interconnected world demands a broader perspective. As technology becomes increasingly “invasive,” education must provide answers that emphasize “beauty” and “spirituality.” This path,he suggests, involves mentors and teachers who act as “friends, companions, parents,” nurturing personal development.
The Cardinal’s address concluded the international meeting held in the New Class of Synodo, in the Vatican on Thursday, May 29.
The Enduring Legacy of Francisco, Embraced by Leo XIV
During his speech, the cardinal noted that Pope Francis’ educational legacy has been “enthusiastically collected” by his successor, Leo XIV. This inheritance serves as a prophecy, with the new pontiff’s name choice drawing attention to the ‘digital’ revolution and the rise of artificial intelligence.
Amidst questions and anxieties, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça stated that education remains a “fundamental certainty” and a guiding compass. Quoting Pope Francis, he noted, “We don’t just live in a time of change, but in a change of time.” He added that education should encourage the conscious use of technology, fostering critical thinking to understand both its opportunities and limitations.
