Next December 10, 2025 is shaping up to be a dark day for waste management across the Lazio. A national mobilization of the environmental hygiene sector will involve the entire day, with serious repercussions on waste collection in almost all municipalities in the region. Normal service will not be guaranteed and citizens will have to prepare for possible inconveniences.
The trade unions FP CGIL, FIT-CISL, UILTRASPORTI e FIADEL they proclaimed this second national protest after the one on 17 October, which had already registered massive participation. The tension is palpable among the thousands of workers in the sector, tired of unfulfilled promises and negotiations that drag on without outcome.
The heart of the protest concerns the renewal of National Collective Labor Agreement of the sector, which has now expired more than ten months ago. Employers’ associations such as Utilitalia, Cisambiente-Confindustria, Assoambiente and the Cooperative Headquarters they maintain a closed position, continually postponing the discussion and blocking any progress in the negotiation.
The unions denounce working conditions at the limit of tolerance. The average net salary of an ecological operator is around 1,300 euros per month, an inadequate remuneration for a job that requires constant physical commitment, difficult hours and significant professional risks. Inflation in recent years has further eroded the purchasing power of these workers, making a salary adjustment even more urgent.
But it’s not just about economic issues. The union demands also concern fundamental aspects such as safety at workprotections for those who work in treatment plants and the need for a more fair and functional classification of personnel. The issue of generational turnover in door-to-door collection is particularly critical, often entrusted to older workers who have to face the physical effort of collecting hundreds of containers on a daily basis.
For the Lazio the situation appears particularly delicate. Almost all municipalities in the region will be involved in the unrest, with direct consequences on the daily lives of citizens. Abstaining from work could have significant repercussions especially on door-to-door collection servicethe most widespread in the urban centers of the region.
The companies that manage the service have already started issuing preventive communications to users. However, they will be guaranteed minimum service performancein compliance with sector regulations, such as collection at markets, hospitals and large users. For everything else, uncertainty reigns supreme.
The streets of Roma, Frosinone, Latina, Viterbo e Rietitogether with dozens of smaller towns, could find themselves submerged in waste. Citizens are invited to still display their rubbish according to the usual calendar, but with the awareness that they may have to collect it and present it again in the next round if the collection is not carried out.
The message that comes from trade union organizations it’s crystal clear: either the contract is renewed to concretely improve the conditions of those who work, or the mobilization will continue with even more incisive forms. There dignity of work it is not negotiable, especially for those who guarantee an essential public service for the community every day.
Il December 10th it therefore promises to be a crucial test bed. On the one hand the workers who ask for respect and economic recognition, on the other the companies who seem to be aiming to contain costs. In the middle, millions of citizens who risk paying the highest price of this tug of war, finding the streets invaded by rubbish just as the Christmas holidays.
