Latgale Police Warn of “Traffic Accident” Phone Scam Targeting Elderly

Authorities in the Latgale region are investigating multiple cases of fraud where scammers impersonate relatives involved in accidents to extort money.

The Latgale Regional Administration of the State Police is investigating seven criminal cases involving fraudsters posing as relatives of call recipients, claiming to have been “involved in a traffic accident.” The scammers demanded money to allegedly avoid criminal proceedings.

Last week, authorities received reports of these scams occurring in Daugavpils, Viļāni, Rēzekne, Ludza, and Augšdaugava municipalities. Residents of the Latgale region lost a total of €81,240 to these scams.

Protect Yourself from Scams

Neither the police nor other state officials will ever call to ask for money or access to bank accounts.

The State Police is urging residents to be vigilant and to remind their relatives, especially the elderly, about financial security precautions. They advise carefully checking any facts received, protecting bank account details, and remembering that “neither the police nor other state officials will ever call to ask for money or access to bank accounts.” The police advise terminating such calls immediately and never handing over cash to unknown individuals.
