Mannheim (dpa) – National ice hockey player Tom Kühnhackl has to bury his Olympic dream due to injury. The Adler Mannheim professional suffered an upper body injury in the DEL game against the Kölner Haien last Sunday and, according to the club, will be out for ten to twelve weeks. Kühnhackl, who is undergoing surgery today, will therefore not be available for the DEB selection at the Winter Olympics in Milan in February.

“This news is of course extremely bitter for Tom and us. With his experience, his game intelligence and his calm manner, he is one of our most important leadership players,” said Mannheim’s head coach and manager Dallas Eakins about the loss of the two-time Stanley Cup winner.

The 33-year-old Kühnhackl played 18 games for the Adler this season, in which he scored three goals and provided nine assists. With the German national team he came fourth in the 2021 World Cup and took part in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
