New details emerge about the alleged Idaho murderer’s behavior before and after the killings.
Newly released investigation documents reveal that fellow graduate students described Bryan Kohberger as “sexist” and “creepy” while he was enrolled in a criminal justice program in the months leading up to the murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022.
The Idaho State Police recently released over 550 pages of investigation documents in response to public records requests. These documents include summaries of interviews conducted with students and instructors at Washington State University (WSU), where KOHBERGER was a doctoral student in criminology.
According to the documents, KOHBERGER’s behavior was so concerning that one WSU faculty member told colleagues that if he were to become a professor, he woudl likely stalk or sexually abuse his future students. She reportedly urged her co-workers to cut KOHBERGER’s funding to remove him from the program.
According to a report from Idaho State Police Detective Ryan O’Harra, the faculty member told her colleagues, “He is smart enough that in four years we will have to give him a Ph.D… Mark my word, I work with predators, if we give him a Ph.D., that’s the guy that in that many years when he is a professor, we will hear is harassing, stalking, and sexually abusing … his students at wherever university.”
KOHBERGER was sentenced to life in prison without parole last month for the stabbing murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. The murders occurred at a rental home near the Moscow, Idaho, campus early on Nov. 13, 2022.
Concerns About Stalking and Disparaging Behavior
The WSU faculty member told investigators that KOHBERGER would sometimes block the door to an office where several female graduate students worked. She recounted instances where she heard one of the women say, “I really need to get out of here,” prompting her to intervene and allow the student to leave.
The faculty member believed KOHBERGER was stalking people. she informed police that someone had reportedly broken into a female graduate student’s apartment in September or October, stealing perfume and underwear.
An unnamed Ph.D.student who was in the same program as KOHBERGER told police that he enjoyed conflict, was disparaging toward women, and notably liked to discuss sexual burglary – his field of study.
Idaho State police Detective Sgt. Michael Van Leuven wrote in a report that about three weeks after the murders, KOHBERGER told the ph.D. student that whoever had committed the crimes “must have been pretty good.” VAN LEUVEN also noted that KOHBERGER told the woman that the murders might have been a “one and done type thing.”
“Wow, I’m on every channel.”
VAN LEUVEN wrote that the woman “said she had never met anyone who acted in such a condescending manner and wondered why people in power in the department did not address his behavior… The way he spoke to females in the department was unsettling to them.”
One instructor told police that she was assigned to work with KOHBERGER on his doctoral program. She stated that in late August 2022, she began receiving complaints about him from students and staff in the criminal justice program.
The instructor told police that she spent “a lot of time” speaking about KOHBERGER during disciplinary meetings.
According to an investigator’s report, “The meetings focused around KOHBERGER’s interactions with fellow post-graduate students, in and out of the classroom, along with his behavior around some of the criminal justice professors.”
Idaho State Police Detective Sean Prosser wrote in a report that the school received nine separate complaints from faculty members, administration staffers, and other students about his “rude and belittling behavior toward women.” In response, the school held a mandatory training class for all graduate students about behavior expectations.
According to the police reports, many of KOHBERGER’s fellow students and instructors at WSU did not suspect his involvement in the killings. However, at least one fellow student noticed his behavior changed after the murders.
The student told police that KOHBERGER frequently used his phone before the killings but stopped bringing his cellphone to class afterward. She also noted that he appeared more disheveled in the weeks following the murders and found it odd that he never participated in conversations about the Moscow deaths.
She eventually called a police tip line to report that she had seen KOHBERGER with bloody knuckles just prior to the killings and that his hand looked like he had been hitting something.
Cellmate Accounts: Excessive Hygiene and Media Interest
Cellmates who were lodged with KOHBERGER in the Latah County Sheriff’s Office jail in Moscow after his arrest reported that he enjoyed watching news coverage about himself.
One cellmate recounted that KOHBERGER said, “Wow, I’m on every channel.” Another cellmate told police that KOHBERGER enjoyed watching the news about his case unless it began talking about his family or friends, at which point he would promptly change the channel. However, as time passed, that cellmate said he almost entirely stopped watching news related to his case.
Both cellmates told police that KOHBERGER went through three standard-size bars of soap a week, took hour-long showers, and excessively washed his hands, which were red from the amount of hand washing.
The second cellmate also stated that KOHBERGER wanted new bedding and clothes every day.
