The state government of Manipur has set a deadline of December 10 for refugees to return to Myanmar, with an extension until March 2025 for families with children. In Jammu and Kashmir, authorities have taken action against five landlords who were renting to Rohingya refugees, cutting off their water and power supplies as a means of enforcement. These measures reflect a shift towards more stringent border control and highlight the challenges refugees face in finding safe and secure living conditions.
Undocumented Migrants Face Intense Crackdowns in Malaysia and Thailand
As Malaysia’s amnesty program for undocumented migrants approaches its December 31 deadline, local authorities are intensifying their enforcement actions. During December alone, nearly 1,000 Myanmar nationals were detained. In Thailand, a nationwide crackdown started on June 5, which led to over 256,000 arrests by the last quarter, including 193,430 Myanmar nationals. The arrest rates underscore the enforcement measures taken by both countries to regulate the flow of undocumented migrants.
Australia Tightens Border Enforcements and Anti-Migration Laws
Australia has stepped up border enforcement, particularly in the Northern Territory. This quarter saw responses to irregular arrivals, with four individuals detected on Croker Island and eight on Arnhem Land. The living conditions for asylum seekers in offshore detention facilities in Nauru and Papua New Guinea remain harsh, characterized by inadequate basic needs allowances and poor living standards. In November, new migration laws were enacted. These reforms expand offshore detention, give more power to the immigration minister, and implement stricter detention measures, including the ability to confiscate phones.
