Kerry’s Geaney Brothers Dominant in Thrilling Victory Over Derry
In a thrilling finale to their Allianz Football League Division 1 fixture, Kerry clinched a dramatic win against Derry, securing victory in the final moments of the game.
Kerry manager Tomás Ó Sé highlighted the pivotal role played by the Geaney brothers, particularly Paul and Conor from An Daingean. Speaking on Allianz League Sunday, Ó Sé praised their performance: “They had a huge impact today, they were outstanding. Between them they kicked 4-04. At home, even the Tralee lads, would call them the townie forwards.”
The Impact of the Geaney Brothers
The manager continued: “Basically how they play is about being cute and being clever; it’s composed, it’s clinical, it’s skilful. I suppose they’ll be saying back in Dingle that Dingle beat Derry today.”

Ó Sé expressed optimism about the impact of recent rule changes on players like Paul Geaney. He stated, “The new rules will suit the likes of Paul Geaney. People might have been writing off the likes of Paul Geaney, he’s 34, but he’s still going strong. The rules will reinvigorate the likes of him.”
Benefit of New Rules
Former Dublin star and six-time All-Ireland winner Paul Flynn echoed Ó Sé’s sentiments. He believes the new rules will benefit Kerry as they look to build upon their performance in 2024. Flynn stated, “It will reinvigorate Kerry.”
Flynn further elaborated on Kerry’s playing style: “The philosophy of Kerry football is coming through. They were moving the ball at pace and there was space for players. You can see when they introduce the rest of the squad and get everybody up to pace that it will suit them.”
Derry’s Dramatic Performance
In assessing the overall game, Flynn was delighted with the quality of football on display. He commented, “Overall Flynn was very happy with the fare on offer in the Maiden City.”

He described the game as “end to end, chaotic, but fantastic for as neutrals to watch. Derry will take a lot of positives from the game. When McGuigan (Shane) kicks that last point, you’re thinking they have controlled as much of the game as they possibly could and they are going to get out of here with a win, then you had what happened at the end.”
Conclusion
The dramatic victory of Kerry over Derry was not only a testament to their resilience but also the influence of the Geaney brothers, Paul and Conor. Their contribution in a close-fought contest underscores the potential benefits of the new football rules.
As the seasons progresses, it will be interesting to see how these rule changes further impact the playing styles and performances of teams across the league. Stay tuned for more updates and analyses from the world of Gaelic football.
