The rumors have taken on a completely different scale in the last few hours in the NHL.
Earlier this afternoon, Quebec journalist Nicolas Cloutier had already set the table by evoking the name of the mystery player coveted by the Canadian, and since then, other major NHL informants have begun to confirm that Matthew Knies was indeed at the heart of Kent Hughes‘ discussions.
Two major informants have now come to confirm what many already suspected behind the scenes.
On the one hand, Nick Kypreos revealed on Sportsnet that Kent Hughes delayed his press conference until after the trade deadline because he was still working on a major trade. According to him, several people in the league believe that this transaction directly involved the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On the other hand, Elliotte Friedman also added fuel to the fire. In his 32 Thoughts segment, he explained that Toronto was testing the value of some of its players in order to create new assets. And among these names, that of Matthew Knies was seriously circulating.

When you put these two pieces of information together, a picture slowly begins to take shape.
And this is where another interesting element comes into the equation.
Because on the side of the Montreal Canadiens, several observers believe that Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield have clearly sent a message to their general manager. If the Canadian really wants to aspire to win playoff rounds in the coming years, we must stabilize the first trio.
For too long, the left winger position on the first line has been constantly changing. We try different players. We move them. We experiment.
But in the end, no one really seems to establish themselves permanently.
And this is exactly why Kent Hughes would have attempted a big coup.
Find a true left winger capable of completing the Suzuki–Caufield duo.
And when we look at Matthew Knies’ profile, we immediately understand why his name comes up so insistently.
The young American striker ticks practically all the boxes.
This season alone, he has 16 goals and 35 assists for a total of 51 points in 61 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But beyond the statistics, it is above all his style of play that impresses.
Knies is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs approximately 232 pounds. He is capable of playing physical, protecting the puck and imposing his presence around the opposing net.

Drafted in the second round by the Maple Leafs in 2021, Knies first exploded offensively at the University of Minnesota before making the jump to the NHL.
Upon his arrival with Toronto, he demonstrated that he could compete against the best opposing lines while contributing offensively.
In other words, the type of player that the Canadian has been looking for for a long time to complete his first line.
Under contract for several more seasons at an annual salary of $7.75 million, Matthew Knies already represents a well-established player in the NHL and an important piece of the future of the Maple Leafs.

Matthew Knies on the left.
Nick Suzuki at center.
Cole Caufield on the right.
A blend of talent, toughness and offensive production that could completely transform the Canadian’s attack.
And now the information is starting to come out publicly.
With the recent statements from Nick Kypreos and Elliotte Friedman, many are starting to believe that this mystery player was indeed Matthew Knies.
Obviously, a trade between the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs would have been a real bomb in the NHL.
The two organizations are historical rivals.
And major exchanges between these two teams remain extremely rare.
But obviously, the discussions did take place.
Now there remains an important question.
Could this issue come back on the table this summer?
Because Kent Hughes himself has hinted that he hopes to be able to rework some deals that didn’t go through at the deadline.
And if Matthew Knies was really at the heart of these discussions, we understand better why the general manager of the Canadiens seemed convinced that a huge move was possible.
For the moment, nothing has been officially confirmed.
But one thing is certain.
The rumors continue to intensify.
And if the information circulating is accurate, the Montreal Canadiens may have been much closer to a dramatic turn of events than many imagined.
