The D-Backs are facing another setback as their closer, Dominican pitcher Justin Martínez, is set to undergo Tommy John surgery. Manager Torey Lovullo announced the news to Arizona Sports this Friday.
Earlier in the day, Lovullo had revealed that martínez would be sidelined for 12 to 13 months, before confirming the need for surgery.
“The concern is high … we will lose it for a prolonged period,” Lovullo told MLB Network Radio. “It is indeed something that, for now, seems to be very, very serious. And it is very unfortunate.”
Martinez, who is 23 years old, exited Monday night’s game with two outs in the ninth inning due to elbow stiffness.
This is a meaningful blow for the D-backs, who have already lost their opener Corbin Burnes to Tommy John surgery. The team is feeling the impact both on and off the field as thay strive to maintain their position in the postseason race.
