Justice K. Vinod Chandran Sworn In as Supreme Court Judge
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna administered the oath of office to Supreme Court’s new judge Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran on Thursday, January 16, 2025. This appointment increases the judicial strength of the Supreme Court to 33, one short of its full sanctioned strength.
Background of Justice Vinod Chandran
Justice Chandran, formerly the Chief Justice of Patna High Court, has a remarkable career that spans significant positions in the Indian judiciary. His appointment marks a crucial step in achieving the full judicial bench at the apex court.
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Chandran to the Union Government for the position on January 7, 2025. The Collegium aimed to ensure representation from the High Court of Kerala on the Supreme Court bench, noting the current absence of a judge from this state.
Significant Milestones in Justice Chandran’s Career
Justice Chandran was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court in November 2011. In March 2023, he was elevated to the.position of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
Earlier in 2022, Justice Chandran had been recommended for the Chief Justiceship of the Gauhati High Court. However, this recommendation was recalled in February 2023 in favor of the Patna High Court post. The Collegium, led by then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, reconsidered the recommendation based on the evolving vacancies among high courts.
Importance of Full Judicial Bench
The Supreme Court Collegium continually emphasizes the need to maintain full judicial strength due to the overwhelming caseload. With pendency nearing 83,000 cases, the apex court recognizes the importance of its full complement of judges.
A November 2023 Collegium resolution highlighted the urgency: “The workload of judges has increased considerably. Bearing in mind the above, it has become necessary to ensure that the court has full working judge-strength leaving no vacancy at any point of time.”
This sentiment was echoed in a January 2024 resolution, emphasizing the need for constant judicial strength: “The workload of judges has increased considerably and it has become necessary to ensure that the court has full working judge-strength at all times.”
Justice Chandran’s Significance
Justice Chandran is the second Supreme Court judge recommended by the current collegium, headed by Chief Justice Khanna, following Justice Manmohan in December 2024. His tenure in the apex court is set to last until April 24, 2028.
This appointment underscores the collegium’s commitment to balanced representation and addressing the critical need for judicial strength.
Conclusion: Moving Forward
The appointment of Justice K. Vinod Chandran underscores the ongoing efforts of the Supreme Court Collegium to maintain and enhance judicial strength at the apex court. This step is crucial in addressing the burgeoning workload and ensuring effective administration of justice.
As the judiciary continues to face challenges, the emphasis on full judicial strength is likely to remain a key priority.
