Community Response to Jet-Set Disco Tragedy: A Surge in Blood Donations
In the wake of the devastating Jet-Set disco ceiling collapse, which claimed the lives of at least 58 individuals early Monday morning, the community of Santo Domingo has demonstrated remarkable solidarity. A massive blood donation drive has been launched to support the injured, showcasing the resilience and compassion of the Dominican people.

As of Tuesday afternoon, approximately 117 pints of blood had been collected, a testament to the rapid mobilization of citizens eager to assist those affected by the tragedy. This outpouring of support highlights the critical role of community in times of crisis.
National Hemocenter Leads the Charge: Donation Centers Expand Operations
Dr. Pedro Sing, Director of the National Hemocenter, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming response from the public. The population has come en masse,we have had great support from citizens and that is vital, because we need blood for people who require surgeries,
he stated. The Hemocenter, located at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, has been inundated with donors since the campaign’s inception.
To accommodate the surge in donations, additional centers have been established at the Ney Arias Lora hospital in Villa Mella and at the General Directorate of Customs headquarters on Abraham Lincoln Avenue. These locations will continue to accept donations through Wednesday and Thursday, ensuring that the injured receive the critical care they need.
The donation drive has been fueled by personal conviction and a shared sense of responsibility. María Vargas, one of the many donors, explained, I came by my own decision, I have no affected family, but I must contribute donating, as I have the same type of blood as many of the affected people need.
Her sentiment reflects the widespread desire to help, irrespective of personal connection to the victims.
Similarly, María José, who arrived at the Olympic center after her workday, emphasized her simple motivation: I’m here to help people who need.
These individual acts of kindness collectively contribute to a powerful wave of support for the victims and their families.
Remembering the Victims: A Nation Mourns
The tragic collapse at the Jet-Set disco occurred during a performance by merengue artist Rubby Pérez.Among the deceased are Pérez himself and former Major League pitcher Octavio Doctel, who played for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican League. Their loss is deeply felt by the nation.
The nation mourns the loss of life in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims.
The Importance of Blood Donation: A Constant Need
While the immediate response to the Jet-Set tragedy is commendable, it underscores the ongoing need for blood donations. According to the World Health Organization, regular blood donations are essential to ensure a sufficient and safe blood supply. In many countries, including the Dominican Republic, blood shortages can hinder medical treatments and emergency responses. this event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of consistent blood donation efforts.
