Brief Tractor March Culminates in Police standoff and Political Presentation

A planned demonstration by the National Federation of Farmers’ Union Tractors, advocating for the impeachment of the current president, faced a significant police blockade, resulting in an 18-hour standoff on March 26th. The tractors, initially halted near Gyeongbokgung Palace, managed a short procession before returning to thier base in Chungnam.

Early Morning Confrontation and Escalating Tensions

the situation began to intensify around 4:15 AM when police located a tractor in proximity to a protest encampment established by Yoon Seok-yeol and the Social Reform Emergency Action group near Gyeongbokgung Palace. attempts to relocate the tractor using force and forklifts led to a prolonged confrontation with protestors in the Jahamun area of Jongno-gu.This incident subsequently attracted impeachment advocacy groups, who staged rallies and press conferences in support of the farmers.

Rally and Allegations of Police Misconduct

By 7:00 PM,a substantial rally organized by the Emergency Action group at Zahamun-ro drew an estimated 6,000 police officers. Demonstrators voiced their opposition with signs and slogans, specifically targeting Park Hyun-soo, the head of the Seoul Police Agency, accusing him of “national violence.”

The Emergency Action group has formally accused the police of employing excessive force and unlawful tactics during the tractor removal. They have filed a lawsuit against park Hyun-soo, citing charges of illegal arrest, abuse of authority, and assault.

A Brief March and Subsequent Dispersal

A turning point occurred when Democratic Party representative Kim Hyun-jung negotiated with the Seoul National Police Agency, securing permission for a limited tractor procession. Despite delays in locating a suitable trailer, one tractor managed to travel approximately 350 meters towards Gyeongbokgung Station near Tongin Market for about 20 minutes. This symbolic gesture was met with enthusiastic support from impeachment rally participants, who chanted We have won! and cheered the tractor. Following the tractor’s departure on the trailer, the demonstrators dispersed.

Implications and Anticipated Disruptions

While the immediate confrontation surrounding the tractor has subsided, authorities are bracing for potential traffic disruptions due to a large-scale impeachment rally planned for March 27th in downtown Seoul. The Emergency Action group and the Democratic Trade Union are scheduled to participate in a National Citizen’s General Strike, with planned marches originating from various key locations, including seoul Station, Myeong-dong Station, Sinchon Station, and Hyehwa Station.

Such large-scale demonstrations can significantly impact daily life. For example, during similar protests in France in 2018, traffic in Paris was brought to a standstill, and many businesses were forced to close early due to safety concerns. The economic impact of such disruptions can be substantial, affecting both local businesses and the overall economy.
