(Jeju = Yonhap News) Reporter Baek Na-yong = The prosecution requested five years in prison for a Jeju City Hall official who was sent to trial for embezzling hundreds of millions of won from the sale of volume-rate waste bags.
The Jeju District Prosecutors’ Office requested the court to sentence Mr. A, in his 30s, to 5 years in prison and an additional fine of 601,066,040 won for Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement) at a decision trial held on the 11th under the Criminal Division 2 of the Jeju District Court (Presiding Judge Lim Jae-nam).
Mr. A is accused of embezzling over 600 million won on a total of 3,837 occasions while in charge of supplying and managing volume-rate bags at the Living Environment Department of Jeju City Hall from April 2018 to July 2025.
It was discovered that Mr. A delivered pay-as-you-go bags to a designated sales office, received payment in cash, and then processed the order as a cancellation and stole the money.
Mr. A was found to have embezzled money about 1,100 times last year, gradually increasing the number of crimes committed only about 30 times in 2018 and not being detected.
It is known that the embezzled money was squandered on living expenses, online games, and cyber gambling.
The prosecution stated the reason for the sentence, saying, “The crime method in this case was planned and the nature of the crime was bad,” and “Most of the misappropriated money was used for gambling, and the victim was not recovered at all.”
At the trial on this day, Mr. A said, “I am sorry for tarnishing the reputation of not only my colleagues but also the Jeju administrative system. I will not make excuses or excuses. I will definitely repay the money I embezzled. I ask for your leniency so that I can repay even one more penny as soon as possible.”
