The Käthe-Kollwitz-Museum Berlin is celebrating the opening of its new exhibition rooms on the 1st floor of the theater building with a special highlight: an exhibition of works by renowned ceramic master Jan Kollwitz. The artist, great-grandson of Käthe Kollwitz, will inaugurate the new exhibition rooms in the theater building, having been a guest at the museum’s former location in Fasanenstrasse.
From July 5th to 13th,2025,the exhibition will showcase expressive ceramics by the artist, accompanied by photographs taken in his workshop in the Holstein Klosterdorf Cismar on the Baltic Sea. These images offer a glimpse into his creative process.
Visitors will gain insights into conventional Japanese manufacturing techniques of ceramics. Jan Kollwitz will be present throughout the exhibition, offering opportunities for discussion and allowing visitors to learn more about his work.
Since 1988, Jan Kollwitz has been creating timeless ceramics in his workshop in Cismar. The colors and shine on his pieces are achieved through a four-day firing process in an Anagama wood-burning oven, reaching temperatures above 1250 degrees Celsius.
Jan Kollwitz is among the few German ceramicists who bridge European ceramic art with Far Eastern traditions through transcultural approaches and the preservation of authentic firing techniques.
During his three-year training with ceramist Horst Kerstan in Kandern in the Black Forest, Jan Kollwitz was first exposed to Japanese techniques. This experience inspired him to learn this approach from scratch. He apprenticed with Master Yutaka Nakamura in Echizen, japan, for two years,an experience that continues to influence his artistic work.
His works are part of significant museum collections internationally, including the Fine arts Museum in Boston, the British Museum in London, the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, and the Museo Nacional de Cerámica in Valencia.
Finissage and Artist Talk
On Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 11 a.m., the finissage will feature a lecture by Jan Kollwitz. He will discuss the background of his work, the world of Japanese ceramics, and his artistic passion.
“Colors and shine on the ceramics are created during the four-day fire in the Anagama wood brenn oven at temperatures above 1250 degrees Celsius.”
