Three films competed for victory in Japan, ultimately falling within the range of less than 12 million yen, or $72,000. At the top of the box office chart was the historical adventure action film “The Golden Deity: Assault on Abashiri Prison,” which opened at $2.31 million.
The new box office leader is the second full-length film based on the popular manga “The Golden Deity,” published from 2014 to 2022. The premiere of the first took place in January 2024, the current debut box office was 31% less than two years ago.
The total circulation of the manga has exceeded 30 million copies. The plot centers on the hunt of adventurers for Ainu gold, supposedly hidden somewhere on the island of Hokkaido. The action takes place shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War. Between the two live-action films, a television live-action miniseries was released in October 2024. There is also an animated series, the latest fifth season of which appeared at the beginning of the year.
“Jumpers” earned 365.41 million yen or $2.29 million in the first three days. The debut box office was 8% ahead of “Elementary” in August 2023 and 90% ahead of “Elio” last August. In the third weekend, the anime “Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle of the Underwater Devil” chalked up $2.24 million with a 31% drop in box office receipts. The fourth weekend brought in $1.8 million for a total of $7.2 million after twenty-four days. Let us remind you that the Netflix online cinema project was supposed to be shown for only a week on the screens of 27 cinemas.
