Indonesia Grateful for India’s Support in BRICS Permanent Membership Bid

Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto expressed his deep appreciation to India for backing Indonesia’s application to join the prestigious BRICS economic bloc as a permanent member. This support comes at a crucial time as the countries push forward on various fronts to reinforce regional and global stability.

Understanding the BRICS Economic Bloc

The BRICS, an acronym standing for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was established as an alternative to the G7. Currently, the organization includes a total of ten countries, with Indonesia as one of its newest members. Its primary aim is to foster economic cooperation among emerging nations and challenge the traditional Western-dominated global economic order.

India’s Support for Indonesia’s Bid

“We also thank India for supporting our permanent membership in BRICS,” President Prabowo stated during a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. He emphasized that this kind of collaboration is essential for ensuring global stability and fostering regional collaboration.

Bilateral Agreements and Enhanced Cooperation

During his meeting with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House, President Prabowo announced that the two nations have agreed to deepen cooperation across several areas including trade, defense, investment, tourism, health, energy, digital affairs, artificial intelligence (AI), and information technology.

With a view to making the implementation of these agreements as seamless as possible, President Prabowo instructed his officials to simplify bureaucratic processes.

“I have given this directive, and I will continue to instruct necessary directives to accelerate and strengthen economic cooperation with India,” he shared.

Long-Term Strategic Partnership

The Indonesian leader also highlighted that his country will prioritize its strategic partnership with India in the future if necessary. This forward-thinking approach underscores the importance both nations place on their collaboration going forward.

Mou Signing and Bilateral Meeting Outcomes

At the sidelines of the bilateral meeting, representatives from both countries signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) covering various fields. According to President Prabowo, the talks were “intensive and open,” and he expressed thanks to the Indian government for the warm welcome they received.

Conclusion: A New Era of Cooperation

The visit and resultant agreements signal a new phase in the relationship between Indonesia and India. With both countries committed to common goals and aspirations, their cooperation promises to bring incredible benefits to the region and the globe at large.

Reflecting on the positive outcomes of the bilateral meeting, President Prabowo stated, “Our discussions with Prime Minister Modi and his government were very intensive and open.”
