Table of Contents
A look into the iconic actor’s decision-making process and the films he prioritized over a role in Coppola’s masterpiece.
A Classic’s Enduring Appeal
Francis Ford coppola’s The Godfather
(1972) remains a cinematic touchstone, consistently lauded by critics and audiences alike. It’s influence on filmmaking is undeniable, serving as a model for aspiring and established directors. However, not everyone was eager to be a part of its legacy.
The Refusal: Nicholson’s Road Less Traveled
While some actors, like Sylvester Stallone, were deemed unsuitable for roles in The Godfather
, one actor outright declined an offer: Jack Nicholson. Fresh off the success of Five Easy Pieces
, Nicholson was already a significant figure in Hollywood.Despite Coppola’s offer of a considerable role, Nicholson passed, a decision that might seem baffling to some.
Business Sense or Artistic Vision?
Nicholson later explained his rationale for turning down The Godfather
, as well as The Sting
, another classic directed by George Roy Hill.He acknowledged their potential for success but prioritized other projects that resonated more with his artistic sensibilities.
I think I had a business sense.I know I have a business sense.I knew then that the scam and the godfather were going to be enormous success. At the same time, I think the last chore and Chinatown are, for me, the most interesting of the four films.
The Films He Chose Instead
Instead of joining the Corleone family, Nicholson opted for roles in The Last Detail
(1973) and Chinatown
(1974). The Last Detail
, directed by Hal Ashby, saw Nicholson as a navy officer escorting a young prisoner, offering him a final taste of freedom. Chinatown
, Roman Polanski‘s neo-noir masterpiece, featured Nicholson as a private detective embroiled in a web of deceit and murder in 1930s Los Angeles. Many consider Chinatown
to be the greatest film of the 1970s.
A Desire to Work with Brando
Nicholson’s decision wasn’t solely based on the scripts themselves. He also expressed a strong desire to work with Marlon Brando, but under the right circumstances. He felt his potential role in The Godfather
wouldn’t provide the meaningful collaboration he envisioned.
The godfather was going to be a good film. I had always wanted to work with Marlon [Brando]but I was asked to play the main role and a) I thought it should have been an Italian and b) I had no scene with Marlon in the scenario I read, and I thought I could work with Marlon onyl once and I hope it might very well be something when we work together.
The Long-Awaited Collaboration
Nicholson’s patience paid off. Four years later,he finally shared the screen with Marlon Brando in Arthur Penn’s Western,The Missouri Breaks
. While the film received mixed reviews, it fulfilled Nicholson’s ambition to work alongside one of his idols. His career continued to flourish, solidifying his status as a cinematic icon with few regrets.
Standing by Principles: Brando’s Oscar refusal
Nicholson wasn’t the only one in hollywood standing by his principles. Marlon Brando famously refused the Best actor Oscar for his performance in The Godfather
in 1973, sending Sacheen Littlefeather, an Apache actress, to the ceremony to protest the misrepresentation of Native Americans in film. This act underscores the importance of integrity and social consciousness within the entertainment industry.
