Italian national Detained in Texas Awaits Repatriation for Medical Treatment
HOUSTON – A legal battle is underway to repatriate an Italian man detained in Texas who requires urgent medical attention. Vincenzo Bertolone, 46, originally from Pozzuoli, is currently being held in an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) centre after his visa expired.
According to his lawyer, giovanni De Blasio, discussions are ongoing with the Italian ministries of foreign affairs and justice, as well as the Italian consulate in Houston, to expedite Bertolone’s return to Italy. De Blasio argues that his client’s health necessitates surgery that would be costly in the United States but is readily available in Italy, where Bertolone also faces a 9-year sentence for drug-related charges.
Bertolone was initially detained in March after a traffic stop when his family was returning from the United States. He was then transferred to an ICE center in Texas due to his expired visa.
While in detention, Bertolone was hospitalized at the HCAuston Conroe Hospital and diagnosed with an umbilical hernia requiring surgery. His family reports that he cannot afford the surgery in the US and that conditions at the detention center are exacerbating his condition.
De Blasio stated that the family has requested immediate repatriation to Italy, even at their own expense, and has provided a flight itinerary. Though, US authorities (ICE) have not yet scheduled the repatriation. The Italian Consulate in Houston has stated it lacks the authority to make decisions on repatriations and has referred the matter to the US State Department.
De blasio emphasized that the goal is to have Bertolone returned to Italy to face his sentence, ensuring he receives appropriate medical care and maintains his dignity. “The 46-year-old is reported in italy, immediatly making him available to the judicial authority for the execution of the sentence,” he stated. “Therefore, not a request for impunity, but the protection of the right to health and dignity with adequate care in Italy.”
