Did the US and Israel Orchestrate Assad’s Downfall? Khamenei Claims "Evidence"

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has made a shocking accusation: the collapse of the Syrian government was a joint operation by the United States and Israel.

In a televised address, Khamenei stated definitively, "There should be no doubt that what has happened in Syria is the result of a joint American and Zionist plan. We have evidence, and this evidence leaves no room for doubt.” He further alleged that a neighboring country, though unnamed, has also played a significant role.

Assad’s Sudden Fall: A Rebel Blitz

The unprecedented speed of Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapse, swift and decisive, followed a surprise rebel offensive that swept across Syria starting in late November. Major cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and ultimately Damascus, fell comparatively easily. This drastic turn of events culminated in a December 8th broadcast on Syrian state television, where a group of men declared Assad overthrown, and all prisoners released.

While Russian officials and Iranian state media confirmed Assad’s departure for Moscow, seeking asylum, the Syrian prime minister, Mohammed Ghazi Jalali, announced a willingness to engage with an opposition-led administration.

A Decade of Conflict and Shifting Alliances

Syria’s brutal civil war, ensuing from anti-government protests violently suppressed in 2011, has raged for over a decade, leaving nearly half a million dead and millions displaced. Assad, backed by Iran and Russia, gradually reasserted control over much of the country.

However, the recent surprise offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a jihadist group, exploited the vulnerabilities created by Russia’s war in Ukraine and ongoing Israeli-Iranian tensions, isolating Assad and leaving him with little support.

Khamenei’s Claims Fuel Speculation

Khamenei’s accusations, backed by "evidence" he claims is irrefutable, have sparked intense speculation about the true nature of Assad’s downfall. While the United States and Israel have long been critics of the Assad regime, direct involvement in orchestrating its collapse remains unproven.
