WASHINGTON – The United States (US) issued a wave of new sanctions against Iranian oil exports. This has become the first sanction of the Tehran energy sector since the ceasefire supported by Washington between Israel and Iran came into force last month.

Among those who were the target of sanctions announced on Thursday (4/7/2025) were Iraqi businessman Salim Ahmed Said and his company based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which was accused of smuggling Iranian oil by mixing it with Iraq oil.

“Iran’s behavior has destroyed it. Despite having many opportunities to choose peace, its leaders have chosen extremism,” said US Minister of Finance Scott Besent.

“The Department of Finance will continue to target the source of Tehran’s income and intensify economic pressure to disrupt the regime access to financial resources that trigger destabilization activities,” he explained.

After a ceasefire was achieved on June 24, US President Donald Trump said that China could buy Iranian oil, which signaled the US might revoke its sanctions on Tehran’s energy exports.

However, the promise did not last long. Trump wrote in a social media upload last week that he “immediately stopped all work for sanctions relief” in response to the statement of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei who claimed victory over Israel.

The US president also said he stopped Israel from killing Khamenei, saving him from “very bad and insulted death”.
