Iran’s Nuclear Program Under Scrutiny After Alleged Attacks

Concerns rise as Iran’s nuclear capabilities face renewed scrutiny following reported attacks and limitations on international inspections.

The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA), Rafael Grossi, stated on June 28th that Iran could possibly resume uranium enrichment using multiple centrifuging cascades “in a matter of months”, possibly even sooner. This statement contradicted claims made by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that attacks on Iranian nuclear sites had set back the program “for decades”.

Reportedly, the United States launched “Operation Midnight Hammer” on June 22nd, deploying 14 GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs, each weighing 13,600 kilograms, along with 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles. The targeted sites included key nuclear facilities in Fordo, Isfahán, and Natanz. These bombs are designed to penetrate deep underground and destroy heavily fortified structures with significant explosive force.

According to Jeffrey Lewis, an arms control expert at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies, the targeted facilities sustained significant damage. However, he also noted that several other facilities remained intact. “Much of the controversy is due, from my personal perspective, that many facilities where not achieved,” lewis stated in an interview.
