A new report provides insight into several alleged improvements from Apple for the next iPad mini. While the iPad mini 8 is expected to outperform the iPad mini 7 in several areas, the upcoming iPad mini may fall short in screen refresh rate despite moving to an 8.5-inch OLED panel.

New details about the long-rumored iPad mini 8 have emerged online from Apple. For context, this new information comes about a month after Bloomberg had raised the prospect of an Apple project for an iPad mini 7 (currently $399 on Amazon). In short, the website suggested that Apple will finally bring OLED display improvements to not only the iPad mini, but also the full-sized iPad Air.

According to Weibo leaker Instant Digital, Apple will release the OLED iPad mini first, which Naver blogger Eyes1122 says suggests will happen sometime in the third quarter of 2026. Conversely, Instant Digital says there is “no movement yet” regarding the iPad Air. So it seems unlikely that both devices will launch simultaneously at the moment.

Meanwhile,eyes1122 adds that Apple will equip the iPad mini 8 with an A19 Pro processor that debuted earlier this year in the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Additionally, the mini’s screen size is said to have increased from 8.3 to 8.5 inches between the seventh and eighth generation models.

Unfortunately, the 60Hz refresh rate is expected to be maintained despite Apple’s adoption of an LTPS OLED display. Therefore, the iPad mini 8 will offer a somewhat degraded viewing experience compared to the usual iPhone 17. Additionally, it is unclear whether Apple has opted for native portrait or landscape displays for its upcoming iPad mini.
