MALAGA – 2025/09/20 08:07:01 – Inés Moreno, a researcher in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Malaga (UMA), has been internationally recognized with a ‘Grifols Scientific Award’ for her possibly groundbreaking research into a therapy for Alzheimer’s disease.
Moreno has been awarded the Albus Prize, an annual distinction recognizing innovative ideas related to albumin, a protein found in blood plasma, and its therapeutic applications.
The Albus Prize includes 50,000 euros in funding over 12 months to support Moreno’s continued research into albumin as a therapeutic tool. She aims to develop a more effective strategy by using albumin as a “glue” to bind to toxic proteins in the blood of Alzheimer’s patients and other neurodegenerative diseases, reducing their toxicity in the brain. According to Moreno,”The idea is to use it as ‘glue’ to which the toxic proteins found in the blood will be joined in patients with Alzheimer’s pathologies and other neurodegenerative diseases to try to reduce their toxicity in the brain.”
Moreno believes that “With this approach we hope to slow down the development of the disease.” She has also received an award from the ‘Alzheimer’s Association’ for her work.
Inés Moreno is the first Andalusian scientist to receive the Albus award from the Global Medical Care Company Grifols. Since its creation in 2015, only four Spaniards have received this award, which is open to both research personnel and clinical professionals.
World Alzheimer’s Day
Today, september 21,marks World Alzheimer’s Day. The University of Malaga is home to the ‘NeuroAD’ group (Neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease), a leading research centre in the study of this disease.Approximately 40,000 new cases are diagnosed in Spain each year.
“with this approach we hope to slow down the development of the disease.”
‘NeuroAD’, directed by Professor Antonia Gutiérrez, the current President of the Spanish Neuroscience Society, is part of the Network Biomedical Research Center of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Area (CIBERNED) and the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga and Platform in Nanomedicin (Ibima-Platforma bionand).
Inés Moreno is a member of ‘neuroad’ and also belongs to Cyberned ya Ibima-Platform Bionand.
