Archynetys, Jakarta – The Deputy Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Anwar Abbas, has raised concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Indonesia. Abbès believes there is more to Trump’s humanitarian gesture than meets the eye.
Deputy Chair of MUI Condemns Trump’s Gaza Relocation Proposal
“Is Trump’s plan worthy of support or not? I don’t think so, because there’s ‘something fishy’ behind this plan that cannot be accepted,” said Anwar in a statement on January 23, 2025.
Anwar suspects that the U.S. aims to weaken Hamas and other resistance groups by reducing Gaza’s population. The decreased number of inhabitants could hinder resistance groups from recruiting new members, potentially strengthening Israel’s control over the region.
Anwar further posits that Trump and Israel have no intention of repatriating Gaza’s residents to Palestine. He argues that these residents’ presence is seen as a threat to both nations.
Gaza Emptying: A Threat to Palestine?
“With the Gaza region emptied, Israel will be even more eager to realize the Greater Israel they have dreamed of, as they will be able to control the territory of Palestine,” Anwar stated in his written statement.
Based on these suspicions, Anwar called on the Indonesian government to reject Trump’s plan. “Because behind the humanitarian mask he (Trump) is using, there is a bad plan that we cannot accept, which is to strengthen and expand the state of Israel while sacrificing the independence and interests of the Palestinian people,” he added.
Indonesia’s Stance on the Gaza Relocation Proposal
Earlier, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Rolliansyah Soemirat, declared that the country has never received any proposal for relocating Gaza residents.
“Indonesia has never received any information regarding this matter,” Rolliansyah stated on January 20, 2025.
Indonesia has indeed been actively providing aid to Palestine, focusing on reconstruction and humanitarian support, rather than relocation.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono stated, “Indonesia is ready to support the reconstruction of Gaza, increase humanitarian aid shipments, and send peacekeeping forces to Palestine if requested by the United Nations.”
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rejects Relocation Plan
In an official statement obtained by Tempo, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that relocating Gaza residents is unacceptable.
“Various attempts to reduce the Palestinian population in Gaza could lead to the expansion of Israel’s illegal occupation,” the statement affirmed.
“A ceasefire in Gaza must be a moment to begin dialogue and negotiations to achieve a two-state solution, following international law and the international parameters that have been agreed upon,” the Ministry stated.
Current Tensions in Gaza
While the debate over Gaza residents’ relocation rages on, the Gaza Strip remains in a state of conflict.

Conclusion
Although Trump’s humanitarian proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Indonesia has garnered significant attention, experts and officials alike remain skeptical. Concerns over the intentions behind the plan are paramount, with critics arguing that it could undermine Palestinian independence and serve broader geopolitical agendas.
Indonesia, by maintaining its commitment to humanitarian aid and rejecting speculative relocation proposals, positions itself as a key player in advocating for a peaceful and just resolution in Gaza.
