Indonesia Moves to Protect Children from Online Harm: Seeking Stakeholder Input
Jakarta – In ongoing efforts to safeguard Indonesia’s youth from potential online hazards, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has confirmed its intention to impose age limits on social media usage for children. Rather than rushing into implementation, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria has emphasized the importance of gathering input from various stakeholders before proceeding.
Government Seeks Comprehensive Input
“We recognize the concerns expressed by the public regarding the impact of social media on young minds,” Patria stated during a podcast in South Jakarta. “Thus, we are committed to consulting with teachers, parents, social media companies, academics, psychologists, and other relevant organizations to understand the issues thoroughly.”
According to Patria, the initiative is a response to widespread concerns among parents about their children’s gadget and social media addiction, as well as exposure to harmful content.
Addressing Mental Health Issues
The deputy minister highlighted the well-documented connection between exposure to inappropriate online material and potential mental health problems in children. “Our goal is to develop regulations that help Indonesian kids navigate the digital world safely, ensuring they encounter more beneficial content than detrimental.”
Positive Impacts of Social Media
While acknowledging the risks, Patria emphasized that social media also has numerous positive aspects. “We firmly believe the positive influence of social media functions far more substantially than its negative effects,” he said.
Role of Teachers and Parents
Involving educators and caregivers is a key aspect of the government’s strategy. “Teachers and parents play a crucial role in shaping the digital environment for children, and their insights can significantly contribute to our efforts,” Patria observed.
Consultations with Social Media Platforms
Collaboration with social media companies will be instrumental in implementing the future regulation. “Engaging social media platforms is essential for us to develop effective solutions that work in practice,” Patria noted.
Consultations with Academicians and Psychologists
The government intends to consult experts in the fields of psychology and education to ensure that the regulation is both scientifically sound and practical. “Expert opinions will help us create measures that protect children’s mental well-being while fostering a positive digital culture,” Patria said.
Working with Relevant Organizations
Partnerships with other organizations will also facilitate the development of comprehensive regulations. “Engaging a diverse range of stakeholders will help us to create a regulatory framework that is reflective of the country’s unique needs and challenges,” Patria explained.
Conclusion
Indonesia’s commitment to protecting its youth from online harm is commendable. By consulting various stakeholders, the government is taking a thoughtful and inclusive approach to regulation. The planned age limits and safety measures promise to create a safer digital space for Indonesian children while acknowledging the positive potential of social media.
