A Political Legend Takes the Stage
On April 4th, the Köthen event centre will host a unique encounter with Gregor Gysi, a prominent figure in German politics. The event, titled “On a word, mr. Gysi!”, promises an engaging evening with the seasoned politician, now often regarded as an option elder statesman.
Unscripted Conversations: A Glimpse into Gysi’s World
The format of the event draws inspiration from years of insightful discussions between Gysi and journalist Hans-Dieter Schütt during book tours. These informal exchanges, often taking place in transit or at casual eateries, form the basis of a new book and the structure for this live event. Attendees can expect a dynamic blend of fast-witted banter, informed commentary, and freewheeling discussions covering a wide range of topics, from current affairs and football to societal issues and utopian visions.
Schütt, the journalist and author, will moderate the event, guiding the conversation through Gysi’s perspectives on life, society, and the potential for change.
Gysi: A Life in Politics and Beyond
Born in 1948, Gregor Gysi’s career spans decades of German political history.A lawyer by training, he is the son of former GDR Minister of Culture Klaus Gysi and the nephew of Nobel laureate Doris Lessing. His early career saw him defending dissidents like Robert Havemann and Rudolf Bahro. He served as the leader of the PDS (Party of Democratic Socialism) from 1989 to 1993 and as a Member of the Bundestag (MDB) for the PDS and Die Linke (The Left) party from 1990 to 2002 and again from 2005 to 2016. He also held the position of President of the European Left from 2016 to 2019.
while he stepped down as foreign policy spokesman for Die Linke in September 2023, Gysi remains a significant voice in german political discourse. His insights are especially relevant given the current political landscape, with recent polls indicating a growing disillusionment with mainstream parties and a rise in support for alternative political viewpoints.
