“Now we will guide the teams, make the purchase and guide the basic health units from all over Brazil for the second half of this year to start using in SUS – said Health Minister Alexandre Padilha.
The expected ministry is, by 2026, to distribute 1.8 million implants, 500 thousand this year alone. The product costs between $ 2,000 and $ 4,000, and the government’s investment will be approximately $ 245 million.
For the Secretary of Primary Health Care of the Ministry of Health, Ana Luiza Caldas, the offer represents “an advance in the actions of strengthening sexual and reproductive planning in the country”.

How does Impnon work?
Organon’s Impnon is the only hormonal implant with health registration at ANVISA, indicated to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It is a small semi -rigid plastic baton containing 68 mg of etonogestrel. It should be placed directly under the skin exclusively by a doctor or nurse specializing in the technique.
Etonogestrel, a female hormone, is continuously released from the implant to the bloodstream. The amount in the implant is sufficient for release for a period of up to three years. Over this time the hormone action prevents the egg release and alters the secretion of the cervix, making it difficult to enter sperm.

The effectiveness of Impnon is high, comparable to that of the pill. According to the Ministry of Health, after the age of three the implant must be removed and, if there is interest, a new one may be immediately inserted by SUS itself. Fertility also returns quickly after removal if the woman decides to get pregnant.
The ministry points out that today, among the methods available in SUS, only copper IUD has long -term action. However, methods of the type are considered “more effective in reproductive planning because they do not depend on continuous or correct use by the user, as with oral or injectable contraceptives,” says the folder, reinforcing that they are reversible and safe.
In addition to the IUD and, soon, the Impnon, SUS offers external and internal condoms; combined oral contraceptive; Progestagen oral pill; monthly and quarterly hormonal injectables; bilateral tubal ligation and vasectomy. Only condoms also offer protection against sexually transmitted infections.
When will Impnon arrive in SUS?
The Ministry of Health said it should publish, in the coming days, the ordinance that officializes the incorporation of Impnon in SUS. From there, the technical areas will have 180 days, or about six months, to make the offer.
The deadline is due to the need for measures such as updating clinical guidelines, acquisition of the input, training of professionals, among others.
However, as the minister said, Alexandre Padilha, the expectation is that still in the second half of 2025 the implant will begin to be made available in the public network of the country.
