Hyundai Ioniq 5 Battery Life: 200,000km Degradation Test

Lately, more and more electric cars that are mentioned outside the official guarantee reach independent services with their disturbances, and thus the problems of these cars come to light more often, and with much more information from a different perspective than the producers and dealers. And often we happen to find out curious things even about the most admired electric cars, such as the case we wrote a week ago in a Kia Ev6 in Finland, with 184,000 km and the third intervention in its battery, due to swollen modules and a large imbalance between modules and cells. But recently a service in Germany made a discovery on the exact opposite pole, when a Hyundai Ioniq 5 came for a check proved to have almost zero battery degradation at over 200,000 km traveled, which sounds almost too nice to be true.

The parallel I made above Kia Ev6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 is motivated by the fact that the two South Korean models are built on the same technical platform and have the same batteries, with the same type of cells in the form of flexible envelopes, produced by the South Korean company SK.ON. Therefore, if in Kia I had an example of a rapid damage to this battery, and the Finnish mechanic said that envelope cells are more vulnerable to overheating and overload due to their flexible forms, in the case of this Hyundai in Germany we have the exact opposite, a car that has a battery to nine over 200,000 km traveled.

The owner of this Hyundai, named Ulrich, was a year ago at the same service to check his battery, at that time the car indicating 140,000 km, the car then 3 years old. At that time, Ulrich said that of all car chargeings, 70% are fast charge, but he limits charging to 80% of the battery. Only when charging at the 11 kW home socket, the car is allowed to reach 100%. Then the battery was checked and it showed 94.6% health condition, so it had a degradation of only 5.4% at such a path, which was admirable.

Now, of course, she is 4 years old, and the odometer shows 203,067 km. It is clear, therefore, that the owner exploits this Hyundai intensely, if he has traveled over 60 thousand km with him over a year.

The mechanics asked the driver and how long he stayed at the loading stations over this year, but the owner says that if he connects his car to a fast charge station and goes to order a coffee or snack, until he returns, the car is already ready. And 80% in the battery can do another 300 km.

The owner told the mechanic that he has a device and an application that reads the car data, and that application can read his data to determine the battery status, based on the information provided by the car. And the car indicates a health status of 93.8%. So, 6.2% degradation after 203 thousand km traveled, which is quite fabulous. As the more experienced mechanic says, there are not many combustion cars that will boast that at 203,000 km can provide 93.8% of the power and consumption efficiency they had when they were. Only the whole epic of checking this battery has become even more interesting.

The mechanics have connected the car to a professional battery diagnostic device, produced by mahogies, which does deep measures at the level of each cell, including battery charging phases in this process through a fast charge socket. The producer of this machine says that he is one of the most professional in the world, and the data is compared to the parameters that a new car of the same model indicates, to determine the current state.

Following the diagnostic process made by this device, he also indicated the current estimation of battery health, displayed by the car computer, of 93.8%. But the system extracted and the tension indicated by all over 190 cells of the car battery, and here came the paradox, as absolutely all had 3.64V, with zero deviation, according to the data displayed by the Mahle device.

Such a tension precision, without even 0.01V deviation on not even a single cell, is absolutely exceptional even on a new electric car. But somehow this Hyundai with 203,000 km could indicate such values. And this made the device give him a surprising verdict: 100% of the battery capacity, 0% degradation. Absolute zero.

It is almost impossible to believe that an electric car, with an envelope -type cell battery, at 203,000 km, can have 0% degradation, especially since it has charged a majority at Fast Charge stations. Either the battery temperature and tasks management system is so good at Hyundai that it succeeds, or there is a much more likely option that the cells have a small reserve implanted in them when they are new, and now they use this reserve and ultimately they reach the identical parameters with those they had when they were. Basically, that 93.8% indicated by the machine system would be a little more realistic, only that the car manages to provide the same voltage in batteries and the same power for engines and this current capacity, and this has determined the 100% verdict of the Mahle device.

Anyway, the degradation of this battery is admirably small, and the car is one of those admirable examples, how all the electric cars should already be.

Therefore, the mechanics advised the owner to continue to go quietly with his car and eventually return over a year or when he will have 300,000 km traveled. Because now, at 203,000 km traveled, his car is like new.

The owner almost did not believe that he was receiving such a verdict, especially since the estimated car was smaller, as did last year, but eventually he left smiling.
